An Exhibition of Patchwork Rice Bags
4-9 April 2009
This is an exhibition of old( probably , 150-80 years ago) patchwork bags.
In traditional Japan, when common people went to gatherings, like festivals or Buddhist ceremonies , they brought grain or beans in these patchwork bags.
This custom may have existed throughout Japan until WWII, and in some areas it probably continues today.
In Japan in the past, there was the saying that you shouldn't throw away any pieces of cloth big enough to wrap three beans.
I hope people will get a deep understanding of this saying when they look at these bags. kei
